Welcome to Ister's Cakes

Ister’s Cakes, LLC was formed from my recollection of historical facts from my childhood.  My maternal Grandmother was a share cropper well into the 60s and I recall going to visit her many times in Decatur, Mississippi.  It seemed our visits were always at the harvest time and usually ended with a huge meal where everything tasted different and better than what I was used to for every day meals.  At the time I didn’t understand just how hard grandma and my aunts and uncles had to work to make a living.   

To bake a cake, we’d have to search all the chickens hiding places for eggs, milk the cows and churn the rich milk until we got butter for the cake.  Just when my arm felt as though it would lock up, I was allowed to stop churning and a peek into the churn revealed rich yellow butter.  The flour had been bought from a local general store along with the sugar, flavor and baking powder.  My uncles had cut the firewood for the stove and had it stacked ready to keep the temperature steady.

Fast forward to my teen years in our little neighborhood, where mom was one of the many bakers for church events. I got lots of practice measuring flour, sugar and other ingredients as we tried new recipes and turned out delicacies.  Now, each time I’m in the kitchen, I still feel as if she is there with me making sure everything turns out right.   Dad and I often prepared Sunday meals and his specialty was Lemon icebox pie.

Today, although all the ingredients are either delivered by truck or picked up at a local wholesale store,  our cakes are as close as you can get to those from the old days. Each cake is baked to order and shipped Monday thru Wednesday to ensure its fresh when delivered.
